HTP Episode 152 – Amelia Eichler

Amelia Eichler is a film enthusiast and has a passion for the history of moviemaking and movie distribution. In 2019, she wrote an undergrad thesis on the decline of physical media and the impact it’s had on current and future film scholars. I share a lot of Amelia’s concerns and was eager to have her on the show to discuss the accessibility problems introduced by streaming.

During this chat, we reference the court case United States v. Paramount Pictures, Inc. and the subsequent reversal of that ruling, and the impact of both.

HTP Episode 140 – Austin Trunick

Austin Trunick is a film enthusiast and author of the two-volume series The Cannon Film Guide, soon to be expanding into its third volume. Austin and I spend some time talking about the history of the Cannon Film Group, and how their brand of cheap action films fit into the larger movie culture of the 80s. This involves a lot of comparing notes about early video rental places prior to the transition to DVD. We also dig drive-ins like the Mahoning Drive-In and the Circle Drive-In.

And seriously, can anyone tell me how A-Treat wound up in Raw Deal?

HTP Episode 129 – Jim Dirschberger

Image-1

Jim Dirschberger is the creative director at Wide Right Games, the company behind Rifftrax: The Game. Jim and I discuss the game from a design perspective, but also from the perspectives of two fans who really, really want to see riffing in new and exciting ways.  The game is something of a spiritual sequel to the company’s earlier hit, What the Dub?

This was a really fun chat.  Jim talks about the VHS era of movie discovery, while I talked about my fondness for educational films and the one I remember most, The Magic House.  I’d also pointed out that Rifftrax: The Game seems to pull a lot from the SegaCD era of gaming, but done way better.

Rifftrax: The Game is available now on all major consoles, as well as Steam.  You can follow Wide Right Games on Twitter, Instagram, and on their YouTube Channel

This episode also introduces our collaboration with Sci-Fi Coffee.

Dr. Mohamed Noor (last appearing on Hungry Trilobyte in Episode 79) comes back to the show after a great time on Star Trek: The Cruise. He and I recap some of the fun of the trip, but quickly get down to discussing speculation on extraterrestrial life, how looking at fictional creatures can be used to move real-world biology, and another phase of his research.

Topics we discussed:

HTP Episode 127 – SegaMasterTim

SegaMasterTim is a veteran of the Console Wars, having sat in the trenches at Australia’s Sega Hotline. Yes, not only does Tim have some great perspective of what gaming was like in the era of the Sega Master System, he also appreciates how the US and Australia had very different experiences with early gaming culture. In this episode of Hungry Trilobyte, not only do Tim and I get to talk gaming, but we extend those ideas and look at how our online socialization reflects the changes that started in the 80s.

HTP Episode 125 – Chris Byrne, “The Toy Guy”

Chris Byrne is a toy enthusiast and historian. He operates a blog called The Toy Guy and a podcast called The Playground Podcast. Noting how children use play and imagination to form how they see the world, Chris has some great insights into the roles that toys hold in our lives- both when we’re young and when we’re old. In this episode of Hungry Trilobyte, Chris and I look at how toys have shifted in the eyes of our larger culture. The two of us look into the rise of the adult toy collector, and the weird ways the industry has settled in the wake of Toys R Us closing its doors.

HTP Episode 118 – Larry Hankin

Larry-Hankin

Anyone who has seen Home Alone, Billy Madison, Friends, or Seinfeld will recognize Larry Hankin in a second.  Diehard fans will also spot him in Star Trek and Married With Children.  In this episode of Hungry Trilobyte, Larry and I start off by discussing acting and finding creativity (we all have it!) and then move on to trying to understand if we have any hope for surviving as a people—on earth or in space.  Turns out, Larry looks at life from an anthropological point of view, and has some insights about the book The Naked Ape.
