HTP Episode 074 – Steven Jay Rubin

Steven Jay Rubin is the author of The James Bond Movie Encyclopedia. As a fellow Bond fan, I’m happy to pick his brain on classic 007 topics such as “Which Bond actor worked best?” and “Does the Bond continuity work?” He and I have a mutual admiration for the lengths the franchise has went through to stay fresh and relevant.

In addition, Steven is a screenwriter with a particular interest in comedy—real comedy, funny comedy, and we spend a lot of time talking about how the genre isn’t at its best right now, and ways it could see new life.

The James Bond Movie Encyclopedia is available on Amazon right now.  If you’d like a signed copy, check with the good folks at Larry Edmunds Bookshop.

Check out Steve’s Facebook group for the book, and watch for his feature “This Day in James Bond Movie History”.  You can also find him on LinkedIn,  and his somewhat lesser-used Twitter.

Nick Bailey is the voice behind the Fancounters Celebrity Podcast, a creativty discussion podcast with an approach very similar to Hungry Trilobyte. Nick also has a solid background in independent film with projects such as Life On Our Own and Growing Up Hollywood.

In this episode, Nick and I talk about the merits of podcasting and independent film, and I get to talk about what I consider to be the Golden Age of indie cinema: the years 2000-2012.  I take this opportunity to gush over one of my favorite weird projects, Moving.

In addition to the website Fancounters.com, you can track Nick’s podcast on Twitter , Facebook, and YouTube.

A605E50E-D66B-41C1-BD72-892559A37712

Lanie Labens (first seen in Episode 36) has returned to Hungry Trilobyte to talk about her new book, The Bear Moon, as well as her writing persona of Halston Blake. This is a fantastic chat, full of insights into writing genre fiction in the 21st century, motivating yourself as an author (especially an unpublished author) and the value of writing something you’re passionate about!

Not only do we pick apart how genre fiction can cross over into more mainstream types of fiction, we also share our other mutual interests: Animal Crossing, and getting back to conventions sooner rather than later!

You can buy The Bear Moon digitally from Amazon as well as on paperback.  You can buy books directly from the author herself on the official author’s website, Halstonblakeauthor.com .

You can follow Lanie’s non-literary adventures on her on Twitter, YouTube, and Instagram.

Fredd has a lot of in-depth knowledge about films, especially bad movies, and how to enjoy bad movies better than good ones. In this episode, Fredd and I enjoy swapping stories about how to approach film and TV outside our comfort zones.

You can follow Fredd’s adventures on his official website, as well as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube.

B9ECAEC5-CE01-41BD-B1C6-FB3A097015E9

Kennedy Phillips is a professional Sound Designer, as well as an enthusiast of vintage audio drama and online content creator. He has worked on projects such as Spiders and Arctic. His own projects include the audio drama Magus Elgar, as well as the series Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss. In this episode, Kennedy and I discuss the impact that sound engineering has on the dramatic experience, and the different ways that can be presented in film, audio drama, podcasts, and even in real life.

That conversation takes an unexpected turn, when we jump from talking about audio drama to our various feelings on Star Trek: Voyager.

You can follow Kennedy on his official website as well as his Twitter account.
